Navalny’s appearance at Moscow City Court on Tuesday came two days after protests in cities across Russia saw the detention of thousands of people who had taken to the streets calling for his release. The previous Saturday, demonstrations across 120 cities took place. The opposition leader had been arrested at a Moscow airport last month after arriving back from Berlin, where he had been treated for poisoning by the Novichok nerve agent in an attack he says was ordered by Putin....

The critic of Russian President Vladimir Putin, who has decried the allegations as a political move to put him in jail for a long time, is already carrying out a 2 1/2 year sentence in a penal colony. The prosecution asked for the 13-year sentence and a fine of 1.2 million rubles (roughly $10,700) during closing arguments Tuesday, the Associated Press reported. Russia’s legal and political battle with Navalny has been going on for years, but it wasn’t until January 2021 that he was arrested and later imprisoned for the shorter sentence over parole violations from an earlier fraud case....

Leonid Volkov, Navalny’s chief of staff, told Newsweek Wednesday that the politician’s team is continuing their operations despite Navalny’s jailing and recent ill health, plus intensified Kremlin efforts to shutter their organizations and intimidate Navalny’s supporters. “So far we have been able to survive, we are flexible enough to adapt,” Volkov told Newsweek from Lithuania. Volkov is unable to return to Russia due to an outstanding arrest warrant against him....
