In April 2022, WarnerMedia merged with Discovery, Inc. to become Warner Bros. Discovery, Inc., and a lot of changes have begun to take place, the biggest of all being the shelving of the upcoming Batgirl movie, which had completed filming earlier this year.

Over the past few weeks, six original Warner Bros. movies, labeled as Max Originals, were removed from HBO Max in an effort to cut costs, Variety reported.

The movies that faced the chopping block were sci-fi rom-com Moonshot starring Lana Condor and Cole Sprouse, dystopia comedy Superintelligence starring Melissa McCarthy, Robert Zemeckis’ 2020 remake of The Witches starring Anne Hathaway, Octavia Spencer, Stanley Tucci, and Chris Rock, the hilarious An American Pickle, starring Seth Rogen, the heist movie Locked Down with Anne Hathaway and Chiwetel Ejiofor, and Charm City Kings.

Some of the biggest film franchises to exist will be leaving the streaming platform, including the Final Destination franchise, the Harry Potter franchise, and the Ocean’s franchise on August 31.

Also leaving HBO Max are the two Christopher Nolan blockbusters Batman Begins and The Dark Knight as well as the hit Zac Efron comedy, 17 Again.

Movie fans who grew up in the ’00s will be devastated to hear the Hilary Duff classics A Cinderella Story and the sequels If the Shoe Fits and Once Upon a Song will also be departing from the streaming platform.

It is not uncommon for movies and television series to be removed from the platform, and HBO Max issues monthly updates about titles being added and removed. Removals may also be down to licensing agreements.

For example, the Harry Potter franchise left HBO Max for Peacock in the summer of 2020, 90 days after HBO Max launched. All eight movies returned in September 2021 much to fans’ delight but then returned to Peacock on July 1, 2022, with them officially leaving HBO Max on August 31.

However, Harry Potter is not the only movie franchise leaving HBO Max and it may not be the last. Newsweek has the full list of movies leaving HBO Max in August 2022 below.
