While some have said the progressive politician’s dress is tone-deaf because of the event’s nearly $35,000 tickets, most invited celebrities don’t pay to attend, according to The Evening Standard. The publication says the Met Gala chooses up-and-coming designers to feature their work at the event. Celebrities who wear their fashions get to attend the event for free.
Ocasio-Cortez’s gown was made by Brother Vellies designer Aurora James, Teen Vogue reported.
Otherwise, there’s a waiting list for tickets for the invite-only event. The event is an annual fundraiser benefiting the Metropolitan Museum of Art’s Costume Institute in New York City.
In a tweet, writer Ilana Kaplan called Ocasio-Cortez’s dress “simply iconic.”
Conservative political writer Brent Scher wrote, “It would have been one thing for @AOC to wear the TAX THE RICH dress to #MetGala as a protest of the absurd event. But nope, she’s all in with the stars walking its red carpet.”
Twitter user @Agronveliu97 tweeted, “i’m not american but aoc is an anti-capitalist queen we love to see it #MetGala”.
A conservative writer named David Hookstead, wrote, “A table at the Met Gala costs around $275,000 and an individual ticket costs $30,000. If @AOC hates the rich so much, why is she attending an event that only the wealthiest people in America can afford to attend? I wonder if any journalists will do their job and ask her.”
WABC host Lidia Curanaj wrote, “The epitome of stupidity. #AOC wearing a several thousand dollar dress with ’tax the rich’ on it at a gala that glorifies the extravagant elite #MetGala”.
Writer Konrad Juengling wrote, “You realize the Met Gala is a fundraiser that helps support the Metropolitan Museum of Art, right? Criticizing AOC for wearing that message (super on brand for her) when she paid to attend a fundraiser makes you look like the arse, not her.”
In a response to Ocasio-Cortez’s critics, journalist David Lytle wrote, “Those two things are not incompatible. Why should she not attend the #MetGala ? Why would her message prevent from accepting an invitation to this event?”
Writer Derek Wallbank commented, “In order: - Irony is obvious & intentional - There’s tons of press at the Met Gala so it’s an easy way to get free clicks on your message, esp. in the non-political press - @AOC knows how to go viral, and has done so on a core message.”
The “Tax the Rich” dress is in line with Ocasio-Cortez’s past proposals to help fund progressive legislation.
Ocasio-Cortez has previously proposed increasing the marginal tax on the nation’s wealthiest Americans in order to pay for the Green New Deal (GND). The GND is a set of proposals that would help improve national infrastructure and fight climate change.
Throughout her political career, Ocasio-Cortez has also criticized wealthy business owners who don’t pay their employees enough for them to afford basic needs like food, shelter, transportation and healthcare.
Newsweek contacted Ocasio-Cortez’s office for comment.
