The incident on the set of his new Western movie “Rust” in New Mexico killed his 42-year-old director of photography Halyna Hutchins and sent writer-director Joel Souza to a hospital. According to “Rust” actress Frances Fisher, Souza is out of the hospital as of early Friday morning.

The set remains locked down by Santa Fe deputies, who arrived at the Bonanza Creek Ranch set shortly after the incident following a 911 call. Production has halted as the investigation into the shooting continues.

“This investigation remains open and active,” Santa Fe County Sheriff’s spokesman Juan Rios said in a statement. “No charges have been filed in regard to this incident. Witnesses continue to be interviewed by detectives.”

Baldwin issued a statement on Twitter conveying his “shock and sadness” following the death of his colleague. He said he is “fully cooperating” with the police investigation" and is in touch with Hutchins’ family.

“My heart is broken for her husband, their son, and all who knew and loved Halyna,” he said.

The full statement says, “We along with the entire film community in New Mexico are saddened by the tragedy that happened on the set of Rust, yesterday. We send our deepest condolences to the family of Ms. Halyna Hutchins and are keeping positive thoughts for a complete recovery for Mr. Joel Souza. The safety and well-being of all cast, crew, and filmmakers in New Mexico is a top priority at all times.”

In a report from the Los Angeles Times it says, camera operators and assistants walked off because of long hours and pay.

The shooting occurred around six hours after the union camera crew left.

“We received the devastating news this evening, that one of our members, Halyna Hutchins, the Director of Photography on a production called ‘Rust’ in New Mexico died from injuries sustained on the set.”

The guild said the details of are “unclear at this moment” but it is “working to learn more and we support a full investigation into this tragic event.”

“This is a terrible loss, and we mourn the passing of a member of our Guild’s family,” the statement added.

A statement from New Mexico First Judicial District Attorney, Mary Carmack-Altwies says, " at this time, we don’t know if charges will be filed. We will look into all facts and evidence of the case with great discretion and have further information at a later time."

“My greatest fear is that someone will be fatally hurt on one of my sets. I pray this will never happen,” Gunn said in a tweet. “My heart goes out to all of those affected by the tragedy today on Rust, especially Halyna Hutchins & her family.”

“Mr. Baldwin, when I worked with him, was very professional, very safe. I was shocked it was him…I was like, ‘How can this be?’” professional armorer Tristano said during a BBC interview.

Tristano believes the blame in this incident is on the prop department.

“There has to be circumstances here that we don’t know about yet, but whoever the armorer or person handling the guns, and handed that gun to Mr. Baldwin, that’s his or her responsibility to check that gun, make sure the rounds are the proper blank rounds and set up the shot to make sure whoever is firing is safe,” Tristano said.

“That’s their responsibility, not Mr. Baldwin’s; he’s an actor,” he added.

“I’m in shock,” actor Joe Manganiello, who worked with Hutchins on the 2020 film “Archenemy,” wrote in a tweet. “An incredible talent & great person. I can’t believe this could happen in this day and age… gunfire from a prop gun could kill a crew member? What a horrible tragedy. My heart goes out to her family.”

Casting director Sidra Smith made an emotional Instagram post calling Hutchins her “beautiful sister” and describing the cinematographer as “beautifully gracious” and “a hard worker.”

“This breaks my heart into pieces,” Smith wrote. “Rest in peace, my beautiful sister. I will be forever grateful to you.”

In an email obtained by Indie Wire, the International Alliance of Theatrical Stage Employees (IATSE) Local 44, which covers prop masters, told members “a live single round was accidentally fired.”

“A live single round was accidentally fired on set by the principal actor, hitting both the Director of Photography, Local 600 member Halyna Hutchins, and Director Joel Souza,” the email from IATSE union Secretary-Treasurer Anthony Pawluc said.

“Local 44 has confirmed that the Props, Set Decoration, Special Effects, and Construction Departments were staffed by New Mexico crew members,” the email said. “There were no Local 44 members on the call sheet.”

Baldwin also said he is “in touch with her husband, offering my support to him and his family.”

Lee was killed after he was hit by a prop gun while filming a death scene for the movie “The Crow.” The gun was supposed to fire a blank, but a dummy bullet from a previous close-up shot had lodged in the gun barrel and was discharged when blanks were used for the same gun in the next scene, according to Entertainment Tonight. Lee was hit in the abdomen and spent six hours in surgery before he was pronounced dead.

Lee’s sister, Shannon, shared her condolences for Hutchins’ family on Twitter.

“Our hearts go out to the family of Halyna Hutchins and to Joel Souza and all involved in the incident on ‘Rust,’” she said. “No one should ever be killed by a gun on a film set. Period.”

Hutchins was born in Ukraine and lived in Los Angles.

She studied journalism in college and worked on documentary production across Europe before switching to film. She graduated from the American Film Institute in 2015 and has about 50 film and television credits, according to the Internet Movie Database.

Hutchins was known for her work on Archenemy (2020), Darlin’ (2019) and Blindfire (2020) and was named a rising star by American Cinematographer magazine in 2019.

She described herself as a “restless dreamer” and “adrenaline junkie” on her Instagram, a page full of photos from her travels and adventures on set.

The film, starring Alec Baldwin, Travis Fimmel, Jensen Ackles and Frances Fisher, is a western that was being filmed in Santa Fe, New Mexico.

According to the film’s page on the Internet Movie Database, “Rust” is about “a 13-year-old boy, left to fend for himself and his younger brother following the death of their parents in 1880’s Kansas” who “goes on the run with his long-estranged grandfather after he’s sentenced to hang for the accidental killing of a local rancher.”

A spokesman for Alec Baldwin said there was an accident involving the misfire of a prop gun with blanks.

Santa Fe County Sheriff’s Office spokesman Juan Rios said detectives are investigating the type of projectile that was discharged from the hun and how it happened.

“This investigation remains open and active,” Rios said in a statement. “No charges have been filed in regard to this incident. Witnesses continue to be interviewed by detectives.”
