Two months after losing 3-0 in Paris, Real dominated PSG and took a 2-0 lead thanks to a brace from Karim Benzema, before the reigning Ligue 1 champions scored twice in quick succession in the last 10 minutes to earn an unlikely draw.
While the draw left a bitter aftertaste in Real’s mouth, the result was enough to secure progression to the round of 16 of the Champions League.
More importantly, the performance was arguably Real’s best display of the season, which would have pleased Zinedine Zidane.
Los Blancos had 27 shots, 12 of which were on target, and played PSG off the park for most of the game, while Benzema continued his prolific form.
The Frenchman has now scored 14 goals in 17 games in all competitions and assisted a further six and suggested the draw against PSG was another step in the right direction.
“The result is not what we wanted, as we always want to win,” he told Spanish newspaper Marca.
“We are improving slowly, but there is still work to be done as a team.”
“We can now concentrate on Alaves this weekend, and our La Liga games, now that qualification is confirmed.”
Not concentrating on Alaves is something Real Madrid cannot afford to do, as its opponents on Saturday are on a two-game winning run, during which they have scored five goals without conceding.
Real has won three times in the last four league games and lead La Liga alongside Barcelona with 28 points, one point clear of Sevilla and three ahead of Atletico Madrid.
With the Catalans traveling to Madrid to face Atletico on Sunday, Real has the chance to take sole control of La Liga this weekend.
Los Blancos, however, will be without Eden Hazard, who was substituted against PSG after limping off the pitch with just over 20 minutes left in the game.
Madrid’s fears the Belgian had suffered a serious injury were quelled after the former Chelsea star underwent a scan, which revealed he had suffered an “external bruise on his right leg.”
While Real has not released an official timetable for his return, Spanish daily Marca and AS both indicated Hazard is expected to be sidelined for approximately 10 days.
That would see him miss the trip to the Basque Country to face Alaves on Saturday, as well as Real’s home game against Espanyol on December 7.
The Belgian is also expected to be unavailable for his team’s final Champions League group game away against Club Brugge on December 12, but should be back in time for the trip to Valencia four days later.
Crucially, if the prognosis is confirmed, Zidane should have Hazard available by the time Real travels to Barcelona to face its arch-rival in the first Clasico of the season on December 18.
Here’s all you need to know ahead of Saturday.
