Human-rights groups in the impoverished African country said they’d seek a court injunction this week to stop the adoption. But some adoption research groups had a guardedly positive reaction. “Practically speaking … there’s no line for Madonna to have cut in front of,” says Tom Atwood, president of the National Council for Adoption. State Department records show that only three visas were granted to Malawian orphans last year–versus 7,906 for China. Madonna’s rep didn’t return requests for comment.
