MORE: National anthem protests around sports
Speaking at a ceremony Wednesday in Hawaii to mark the 75th anniversary of the attack on Pearl Harbor, Adm. Harry B. Harris Jr., commander of U.S. Pacific Command, drew a roar and a standing ovation when he said (via The Associated Press): “You can bet that the men and women we honor today — and those who died that fateful morning 75 years ago — never took a knee and never failed to stand whenever they heard our national anthem being played.”
49ers quarterback Colin Kaepernick, who initiated the form of protest in the preseason, and various other athletes have kneeled during the national anthem to protest, among other things, what they describe as social injustice.
