Towelie is a talking towel, genetically engineered by Tynacorp, to allow him to “make people as dry as necessary, depending on the situation,” according to the South Park fandom wiki. Towelie first appeared in the season five episode “Towelie,” and he is “usually seen either appearing out of nowhere to give towel advice to the citizens of South Park or getting high.”
Now, on “Weed Day,” Adidas has given its Campus 80 silhouette shoes a Towelie makeover, complete with a periwinkle blue terrycloth upper. The shoes’ tongues feature Towelie’s anthropomorphized eyes which become bloodshot when exposed to the sun.
The insides of the tongues feature Towelie quotes, “Don’t forget to bring a towel” and “I have no idea what’s going on,” and two pouches to store whatever the wearer can fit in there. For now, the pouches contain two keychains: a sober Towelie and one under the influence.
The Towelie x Adidas shoes were difficult for South Park fans to get their hands on as they were available to purchase via a raffle hosted on the Adidas CONFIRMED app.
The shoes were originally sold by Adidas for $100 a pair, but scalpers are asking for much more on reselling sites.
At the time of writing, the last Towelie x Adidas sale on StockX was worth $301. There have been 421 sales and the average sale price is $368—a 171 percent premium over the original price, according to StockX. The lowest asking price is currently $280, though it seems as though sneaker fans are willing to pay much more—the highest bid so far is $500.
The highest price a seller is asking for the Towelie shoes is $543, five times the original retail price.
On eBay, the prices are set even higher. One eBay seller is asking for $655 and another is asking for $600. Nineteen pairs of Towelie shoes have been sold on eBay, with their prices ranging from $248 to $396.
There are currently 28 pairs of the South Park-themed shoes listed on eBay. One Towelie x Adidas shoes listing on eBay has received 58 bids, with the current highest bid standing at $295.
There are also around are dozen Towelie shoes listed on Depop, where sellers are asking for hundreds of dollars.
