“It is important to recognize the history but move forward celebrating the power of podcasts,” the International Podcast Day website explains, noting that the day celebrates podcasters, their journeys, and their expertise. There’s even a schedule you can use to tune in and learn something new. Virtual meetups and workshops are also available, for those looking to start a podcast of their own and enhance their storytelling skills.
There are hundreds of podcasts out there, no matter what your interest is - be it true crime, music, politics, lifestyle or gaming, there’s something for everyone to tune into.
Without further adieu, here’s what Newsweek’s Culture Team and Newsgeek listen to on the regular:
Kelly Wynne, Writer
“Every week, I tune in to both the My Favorite Murder minisode and full-length episode for a true crime release, hilarious commentary and incredible conversations on mental health. Hosts Georgia Hardstark and Karen Kilgariff feel like friends who encourage standing up for yourself in threatening situations and applaud self-care. All the while, they unpack horrendous murders, spooky mysteries and total WTF moments with a respectful humor that’s hard to find anywhere else. Karen and Georgia are also in the loop on some truly shocking true crime, and otherwise, television and podcast releases, so you’re likely to find a new favorite just by listening.”
Rebecca Stokes, Senior Editor
“Case File! Australia crime shoooooow! The host deep dives into historical crimes, solved and not. This is going to sound deeply messed up but his voice is soothing enough I have used it to fall asleep, no YOU are the weirdo.”
Rocco Marrongelli, Production Editor
“Comedians of Wrestling Podcast with Dan Black. Comedian Dan Black (UCB, Funny or Die, College Humor) is obsessed with wrestling and takes listeners on a weekly journey, dissecting the current wrestling product to an unhealthy degree. Joined by his comedy buddies and special guests, Dan brings the highest caliber of energy to discuss his greatest passion and it shows. Dan will become ‘One of Your Guys’ as you join him in the COW Universe.
“High & Mighty Podcast with Jon Gabrus. If you have a need for a podcast that discusses a myriad of topics, then let the interests of comedian Jon Gabrus (NBC’s 30 Rock, Comedy Bang Bang) uplift you to a “higher” view. No topic is too dumb for Jon and his celebrity friends. Topics can range from iced coffee to fitness, or even the NYC subway system. Exspect a lot of side tangents.
“The Commissioner of Comedy with James Mattern. If you’re a fan of stand-up comedy and always thought about performing, then let New York City comedian James Mattern’s knowledge on the topic guide and influence you. James teaches about the etiquette of stand-up as he delves deep into the many unspoken rules of what it means to be a comic in New York City and beyond.”

“The best podcasts feel like a good hang, and few do it as well as All Fantasy Everything. Featuring comedians Ian Karmel (The Late Late Show), David Gborie (Comedy Central), and Sean Jordan (The Buck Starts Here), the trio and an array of guests turn life into a fantasy draft. Whether they’re giving their picks for fast food items, emojis or famous people who use a middle initial in their name, each comics’ picks tend to lead to hilarious discussions that make you feel like you’re spending an afternoon with your best friends.”

Pioneered by ex-IGN alums Greg Miller and Tim Gettys, the show features in-depth news coverage, recaps of upcoming game release dates and reader mail questions. If you have trouble keeping up with your Twitter feed, this is a great way to digest the latest happenings.”

“Going in Raw podcast: Looking past the double entendre, wrestling fans will want to check out Steve and Larson’s Going in Raw podcast. Whether you’re looking for reviews of wrestling shows, roundups of the latest rumors and news or fun lists you’ll want to check out this podcast that has near daily uploads. If you’re sick of the WWE vs AEW discourse, Going in Raw brings a positive community of wrestling fans that you’ll definitely want to check out.”

“I actually listen to several podcasts, because I’m a severe insomniac — although maybe podcasts aren’t the best remedy for that — including Marc Maron’s WTF and Armchair Expert. I think my favorites, though, are Conan O’Brien Needs a Friend and How Did This Get Made. Conan is so quick-witted, hilarious, and really a positive comedic voice — not to mention a great interviewer. For How Did This Get Made, Paul Scheer, June Diane Raphael and Jason Mantzoukas dissect some of the worst movies ever made. It’s pretty light-hearted, and I find myself returning to episodes for multiple listens.”
Marina Watts, Writer
“My two go-to podcasts are Last Podcast on the Left and The Rewatchables. LPOTL is packed with topics ranging from Jack the Ripper to lobotomies, and is equal parts informative and entertaining. I feel myself audibly gasp every time. Rewatchables is my favorite film podcast, and hearing new things about some films I’ve seen dozens of times makes me want to rewatch The Departed, The Devil Wears Prada, Ferris Bueller’s Day Off, or what have you. So I guess their title really does work!”
