A trial date is expected to be set at the status hearing because Hernandez already had been scheduled to stand trial beginning in late May for the shooting deaths of Safiro Furtado and Daniel de Abreu. That trial was postponed indefinitely because of the trial arising from Lloyd’s murder.

Hernandez will not be present for the May 21 hearing. He is serving a life sentence without the possibility of parole, subject to appeal of the verdict, for Lloyd’s murder. In multiple respects, the second case against him is even stronger.
